There isn’t any approved art for this movie yet from WB, so enjoy this awesome still from FURY ROAD

Warner Brothers announced today that principal photography has officially begun for the fifth film set in the dystopian Hell world of the MAD MAX films, FURIOSA, in New South Wales, Australia. It will almost certainly be another raging epic of action starring Anya Taylor-Joy (THE WITCH, THE NORTHMAN) as the younger version of the female Imperator. Chris Helmsworth (THOR, BLACKHAT) and Tom Burke (ONLY GOD FORGIVES, MANK) also star in the film. For the deep-cut fans, Burke played Ryan Gosling’s elder brother Billy in ONLY GOD FORGIVES, whose death sets the film’s story in motion.

The press release notes that “The new feature is being produced by Miller’s own Australian-based Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner, together with the filmmaker’s FURY ROAD partners Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures.” and gives us this brief synopsis of the plot.

As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

This stand-alone film within the MAD MAX universe is likely going to take us closer to the catastrophe that ended the world as we know it within the series than we have ever been before and presents a different section of the story that branches out from FURY ROAD.

George Miller and Nico Lathouris, who also was a co-writer on MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, co-wrote FURIOSA. The film will be produced by Miller and Oscar-nominated producer Doug Mitchell (MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, BABE). Many of the creative team members from FURY ROAD are also returning including such longtime Australian collaborators as production designer Colin Gibson, editor Margaret Sixel, sound mixer Ben Osmo, costume designer Jenny Beavan, and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt, all of whom won Academy Awards for their work on FURY ROAD, as well as first assistant director PJ Voeten and second unit director and stunt coordinator Guy Norris. The director of photography is Simon Duggan (HACKSAW RIDGE, THE GREAT GATSBY).

FURIOSA is scheduled to be released on May 24, 2024.
